U-Care Guide
Transforming UrbanCare knowledge into learning pathways for urban health education.
The U-Care Guide is the core educational and pedagogical reference of the U-Care project. It explains how the UrbanCare methodology, case study research, and digital tools are translated into research-based learning for higher education. The Guide supports educators, institutions, and course designers in embedding urban health, climate adaptation, and participatory planning into academic curricula in a structured and transferable way.
Chapter 1. Introduction and Scope
The first chapter introduces the purpose of the Guide and its relevance in the context of urban health, climate change, and higher education. It provides an overview of the U-Care project, defines the target audiences, and clarifies the scope and limitations of the Guide. This chapter positions the Guide as a practical resource for academic implementation rather than a methodological or technical manual.
Chapter 2. Pedagogical Framework of U-Care
This chapter establishes the educational foundations of the U-Care approach. It presents the pedagogical rationale, including research-based learning, transdisciplinary and problem-oriented education, and human-centered and participatory approaches. The chapter defines learning objectives and competencies, covering scientific and analytical skills, digital and data literacy, and participatory and communication skills, and explains how these are aligned with different academic levels and target groups.
Chapter 3. The U-Care Methodology as a Teaching Backbone
The third chapter explains how the UrbanCare methodology is translated into a teaching structure. It introduces the three-step methodological sequence used across courses and shows how research, neighborhood diagnostics, and decision-making activities are integrated into learning modules. The chapter addresses alignment with learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and academic credit systems, supporting coherent and transparent course design.
Chapter 4. Integrating Research into Teaching
This chapter focuses on the role of research within U-Care courses. It explains how shared research themes and methods are embedded into teaching activities and how students engage with data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The chapter also describes how research outputs are linked to planning and design tasks, reinforcing the connection between evidence generation and applied decision-making.
Chapter 5. The U-CARE Web Platform as an Educational Tool
The fifth chapter addresses the pedagogical use of the U-CARE Web Platform. It explains the platform’s role within teaching activities, its structure and functionalities, and how it supports exploration, interpretation, and discussion of urban health evidence. The chapter also reflects on technical constraints and lessons learned from integrating the platform into educational settings.
Chapter 6. Participatory Activities in Education
This chapter examines the role of participation in urban health education. It outlines the rationale for participatory approaches, describes the types of activities used in pilot courses, and clarifies the roles of students, educators, and external actors. The chapter highlights how participatory practices enhance learning outcomes and support real-world engagement.
Chapter 7. Course Design and Learning Sequence
The seventh chapter presents the structure of U-Care courses and their sequential learning logic. It explains how courses integrate research, planning, design, and decision-making phases, and how individual and group work are combined. This chapter supports educators in organizing coherent learning pathways that build progressively on skills and knowledge.
Chapter 8. Teaching Formats and Learning Resources
This chapter describes the teaching formats and resources used across U-Care courses. It covers lectures, seminars, practical workshops, studios, fieldwork, and site-based learning, as well as the use of open educational resources, hybrid teaching formats, and asynchronous materials. The chapter also addresses collaborative and transnational teaching contributions.
Chapter 9. Assessment
The ninth chapter focuses on assessment principles and methods. It explains how assessment is aligned with learning objectives, activities, and competencies, and describes approaches used to evaluate student performance, skill acquisition, and learning outcomes in a transparent and consistent manner.
Chapter 10. Institutional Implementation and Transferability
This chapter addresses how the U-Care approach can be adapted to different higher education contexts. It discusses institutional, administrative, and regulatory considerations and provides recommendations for future implementations. The focus is on enabling transferability while respecting local academic structures and constraints.
Chapter 11. Outcomes, Impact, and Lessons Learned
The eleventh chapter reflects on the educational outcomes of the pilot courses. It presents insights into student skill acquisition, evaluation results, strengths, and challenges of the integrated approach. This chapter provides evidence of impact and supports continuous improvement.
Chapter 12. Conclusions and Future Perspectives
The final chapter summarizes the contribution of U-Care to urban health education and reflects on its potential for scaling and long-term impact. It positions the Guide as a foundation for future academic programs that integrate research, digital tools, and participatory practices to address urban health and climate challenges.
